WINTER SCENES II

The Winter Scenes II collection combines vintage cigarette cards with contemporary hand-painted illustration. Each piece begins with an original cigarette card depicting snowy alpine landscapes, winter sports and mountain views. The cards are mounted onto heavyweight card using gold photo corners, allowing them to be displayed without damage. The reverse of each card remains visible through a cut-out backing, preserving the original description and history.

Working across both the card and mount, Iso adds hand-painted figures in cobalt blue acrylic. Tiny skiers carve across the mountainside, while others pause to soak up the winter sun from deckchairs with a cocktail in hand.

The Inspiration:

Many of these figures are inspired by vintage fashion photography and ski imagery found in Vogue magazines from the 1930s through to the 1990s. Iso is drawn to the glamour of these eras, from skiers effortlessly navigating the slopes in heels to oversized sunglasses, fur-lined jackets and leisurely afternoons spent sunbathing above the clouds

Iso enjoys allowing the illustrations to spill beyond the card and onto the mount, creating a dialogue between the vintage imagery and a more contemporary, playful narrative. The rich cobalt blue echoes the icy tones of winter and the winding traces left behind on snow-covered slopes. Each piece celebrates the nostalgia of vintage collectibles while capturing the simple pleasures of time spent in the mountains.
