Riverside
Riverside combines vintage cigarette cards with contemporary hand-drawn intervention. Each work begins with an original cigarette card featuring fish species, their habitats, and stories of fishing in the British countryside. These historical fragments are mounted onto A5 heavyweight textured paper, creating a clean surface around which a new narrative unfolds - a tiny fisherman, hand-painted in deep crimson, casting his line.
Each piece brings together a fragment of fishing history with something entirely new.
Vintage cigarette cards, featuring beautifully illustrated fish species and their stories, have been placed onto heavyweight paper, with a cut-out on the back so you can read up on the history. On each piece, I hand-paint a tiny fisherman in deep crimson acrylic, casting his line into the world of the vintage card.
The result is a delicate meeting of old and new - historic imagery, forgotten stories and contemporary hand-painted details brought together in a way that feels both nostalgic and fresh.
